They are definitely a must-read.

At the beginning, it looks like a book about a careless youngster in the ending 1920s. Jean Delaude summarizes his Parisian childhood with supreme verve and invents words of his own. He is the friend, the “brother” of Henri Crolla (famous guitarist who will accompany Yves Montand), he is in close contact with Jacques Prévert, he sings opera arias, plays the piano, meets Jean Amadou (a well-known French humorist)… and is up to not much good.
But it’s the second part of the account that strikes hard: Jean Delaude becomes a member of the French Résistance in Paris. Betrayed, he is arrested by the Gestapo and is submitted to torture at the sinister rue des Saussaies, as well as in the Cherche-Midi prison. Lastly, he is dumped into the sadly-named «Convoi des tatoués» (Convoy of the Tattooed) that left Compiègne on April 27th, 1944. Destination Auschwitz-Birkenau. There, ripped of his identity, he becomes reference 185688. Another guy meant to die… Then he is assigned to the Tod Kommando, a job in Hell for this 24-year-old man.
Miraculously, Delaude survives a bullet in the neck, avoids being hanged, lives on through the “Death Marches”… he is freed in 1945, and finds himself being accused – wrongly – to be a “collaborator”!
After the war, Jean Delaude shall become a magician of exceptional talent, performing numerous tricks of great difficulty.
This work contains BOTH versions written by the author before his demise in 1998. It is a book of souvenirs as much as a book of philosophy, for Jean Delaude will be a disciple of Gurdjieff and will pass on his lessons.
Delaude’s early life will influence his future choices. A terrifying account – yet sumptuous with hope – so that the younger generations understand what “to resist” really means.
